I like web based tools that simply work, without logins or email links, and if you’ve been here before, you already know I love diagrams. Today’s selection is three online tools for making diagrams, not the best looking ones, so I’m sharing a bonus one that is cute, whimsical and works well too.
1 — Biology diagrams
This tool allows biologist to share diagrams linked to their scientific papers. Caught my attention because it is embedded into something practical and functional, showcasing one of the main functions of a diagram: explain abstractions using visuals that represent the information. I like practical applications like this because they demonstrate that diagrams are more than visual cool looking stuff, they’re central to amplifying and improve understanding. In a similar vein, there’s this other tool where diagrams are a bit more complex and interactive called Pathway Commons, I’m not sure if there’s a relation between the two but they’re similar enough to share in one item. Their diagrams also feature additional information and functionalities when you click on them. I can only imagine how incredible a platform like this could be with better interface design.
2 — Diagram Computer
I found this tool while looking for a domain name for a personal project, this name is absolutely genius and the person that made this project is for sure a talented programmer but this is hurting my eyes in ways I cannot describe. The project itself is really cool, has a bunch of functionalities and ways to customize so if you can look past the terrible interface it is possible to make and export something interesting. Again, congrats on the domain name, I wish I could have it.
3 — Globs
Globs is a tool for making and editing globs and nodes with code. It’s really cool because it is mostly visual but the output can be code too, so it is perfect for making visual design and creating the shapes in code, also perfect for learning how shapes can be expressed in JavaScript, one of my latest interests. This one is not only web based, free, no login required but also a beautiful interface, super easy to use. I dream of making tools like this. Made by Steve Ruiz, mostly known for tldraw, another really good tool that I love using.
Bonus — Kinopio
Kinopio is not exactly a tool for making diagrams, but you can connect ideas, pictures, text, make groups in a canvas, etc. What I love the most about this tool is how cute it is, it is made to be whimsical and chill, very fluid and easy to use. Sharing this as a resting point for your eyes, as a reward for getting this far.
That’s all for this week, I have another batch of diagram tools that I will share here in another edition, as well as another batch of image makers tools, similar to this one.
If you know of any interesting diagram making or image making tool, leave me a comment or reply to this email, would love to see it!
Have a great week!

Love this roundup!! My fave diagram tool is Excalidraw: https://excalidraw.com/
I think it's beautiful 😅 and that speaks to my zero / negative skills in visual design. But to me, I see beauty in utility <3
